Alexi Burgess (he/him) studied philosophy and mathematics as an undergrad at Harvard, earned his masters degree and PhD from Princeton, and then taught in the philosophy department and Symbolic Systems program at Stanford for nearly a decade. He’s also held visiting appointments at schools like UCLA, Pomona College, and NYU. Alexi’s academic work lies at the intersection of metaphysics, logic, and philosophy of language, on topics like truth, paradox, identity, and indeterminacy. He’s taught courses on everything from axiomatic set theory to the meaning of life and death.

In 2020, Alexi co-founded a self-directed learning center, or “unschool.” Now located in Boyle Heights, Alcove Learning serves queer, neurodivergent, and other teens looking for safe spaces to heal from trauma, build community, and reconnect with their academic and artistic passions. He’s also an amateur playwright; and this one time he even tried to be a literary agent. Alexi has two kids at Sequoyah. He hopes working here won’t embarrass them too much.
