The Head Robotics Coach at Sequoyah School is responsible for building and guiding a program that participates in the First Robotics community. Currently, high school students participate in the First Tech Challenge, with a longer-term goal of shifting into the higher-level First Robotics Competition. Students as young as fifth grade are encouraged to participate as well.

Position Overview

Roles and Responsibilities
Team Leadership and Organization
- Organize and oversee the robotics program, including practice schedules, team meetings, and competition preparation.
- Recruit students and mentors for the team.
- Act as a liaison between students, parents, mentors/volunteers, and school administration.
Technical Guidance
- Assist students in designing, building, programming, and testing robots for competitions.
- Teach engineering design principles and programming languages used in building and programming robotics systems.
- Ensure safety in the use of tools and equipment, including power tools and fabrication machines like 3D printers and laser cutters.
Competition Management
- Prepare the team for local, regional, state, or national robotics competitions by understanding rules and strategies.
- Register teams for events and coordinate logistics such as transportation and accommodations.
Educational Role
- Foster interest in STEM by exposing students to new technologies and problem-solving skills.
- Create opportunities for students to take on leadership roles within the team.
- Promote an inclusive culture, teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-confidence among students.
Administrative Duties
- Manage the program budget, including fundraising efforts and purchasing supplies.
- Maintain communication with parents and sponsors about team activities and expectations.
- Ensure compliance with school policies and procedures related to extracurricular activities.
- Drive and chaperone students to and from competitions in a 10-passenger school van
Qualifications
- A bachelors degree
- Experience with robotics programs such as FIRST Robotics or VEX Robotics is preferred.
- Proficiency in engineering concepts, programming languages, and fabrication techniques (e.g., CNC machining).
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to mentor 5th-12th students effectively.
