Roy grew up one of five sons in Oak Park, Illinois. After seeing a superconductor float over a magnet in high school, he became fascinated with things that are super cold. He also got involved with the high school chess and wrestling team. Later in college, he continued his studies of physics first at the University of Pennsylvania and later at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he earned his PhD, continuing to study superconductors the whole way through.
Roy believes that learning needs to be grounded in experience from labs, made vibrant from inquiry, and reinforced with skill practice. “Learning is the primary way that people engage with the truth and beauty of the universe, and I hope to import that feeling to my classes.”
Roy lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Minfei Chen, and enjoys Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and Tango dancing in his free time.
