The Sequoyah Community

Sequoyah School is a community of learners.

What does that mean?

It means we strive to understand our similarities and differences, treat each other with respect, and uphold our school’s Habits of Mind. We believe learning goes on at all times and in all places, as an exchange among students, teachers, parents and the surrounding community.

We honor and reflect the vibrant ethnic diversity of Southern California, knowing that a school which establishes a rewarding context for engagement, exchange and inquiry fosters individual expression and collaborative responses to challenge.

Yes, our community is ever-changing,  but the school continues to be a community in which we encourage you to take a step towards a new friend, ask a question, try an alternate path and show your work. Here it is better to make a mistake rather than not to have pushed yourself at all.

Parent and Guardian Participation

Parent and guardian participation is encouraged and expected! We know every family member cannot be active in the school at all times, but we see that, over the arc of a child’s schooling, parent and guardian involvement is critical for healthy communication and student success.

Families invest in our community in many tangible and intangible ways. Take a look around the school: the flowers blooming, the fundraising success of our annual Jogathon and Auction, in-depth articles in Phoenix, choreographing the class play, mentoring high school students through Creative Connections and the Social Innovation Program, and parent-taught Options classes are all examples of parents’ good work.

Volunteer opportunities forge a bond with both the school and with other families, staff, and faculty that can’t help but reinforce your child’s experience at Sequoyah.

"I wanted to share all I have gained from Sequoyah: a true understanding and appreciation for a Sequoyah education, watching masterful teachers teach, watching my grandson flourish at school and work to figure it all out, getting to know so many charming Sequoyah students, volunteering with families and Sequoyah school members who are all warm and welcoming, and making new friends."
