Athletics Philosophy

Sequoyah School considers participation in athletics to be an integral part of the overall educational experience. Athletics provides opportunities for physical, mental, emotional, and social development. Competition through athletics is a valuable experience; our athletics program will challenge each student-athlete to strive for excellence, discover their physical abilities, and work cooperatively as a member of a team. Winning will be a natural goal in the pursuit of excellence, driven by foundational principles of good sportsmanship and enjoyment of competition to enhance the educational value of each and every contest.

Participation in athletics is a privilege offered to our students, one that comes with their willingness to accept the responsibilities associated with being part of our programs.

Awards and Championships

Sequoyah Athletics had an amazing 2023-24 season, with championships in five junior high sports!

  • Boys Volleyball
  • Girls Volleyball
  • Girls Basketball
  • All-Gender Flag Football
  • All-Gender Soccer

The Gryphons have also been active at the high school level, with a championship in 2022 for our all-gender soccer team and playoff participants for boy’s basketball in 2024.

Winning is an important part of our athletic programs, but only to the extent that it enhances the development of our student-athletes. In addition to developing fundamental skills and knowledge of their sports, our programs are designed to contribute to the student-athlete’s physical and mental health and maturity, as well as foster high character and moral values.
