High School Performing Arts
Sequoyah School’s Performing Arts fosters creativity and technical proficiency across a wide array of disciplines, including theater, dance, music, and visual arts. Our programs emphasize authentic expression and collaborative learning, encouraging students to develop confidence and skill in their artistic endeavors.
Through foundational techniques, exploration, collaborative projects, and public performances, students develop a deep appreciation for artistic processes, learn to embrace feedback, and enhance their creative abilities. Whether in the classroom or on stage, our students are inspired to take risks, explore new ideas, and excel as dynamic artists and performers.
Theater
Theater at Sequoyah School is centered on collaboration, creative risk-taking, and artistic expression, all within a supportive and close-knit community. Our Theater program offers a rich variety of experiences—from acting and improvisation to playwriting, directing, and costume design—giving students many opportunities to access their creativity and build confidence as they bring stories to life on stage.
Each year, we present two full-stage productions—a play and a musical—where students work side by side with professional designers, choreographers, and music directors. Our performances have taken place at venues like the Boston Court Theater, Lineage Performing Arts Center, and the beautiful outdoor spaces of the historic Gamble House. The year ends with a one-act plays festival directed and produced by our students.
Music
At Sequoyah, we believe music is an art form accessible to everyone, regardless of experience. Our program brings together students from various backgrounds, forming performance ensembles that bridge artistic disciplines. These ensembles perform a wide range of musical styles—hip hop, rock, pop, fusion, and funk—at events on campus and in the broader Pasadena and Los Angeles areas.
The Music program balances foundational music theory with genre exploration, encouraging creativity through collaboration and emerging technologies. As music production tools become more accessible, students practice professionalism, including timeliness, collaboration, and equipment management. Students also examine how history, science, and culture find expression in music, finding ways to make their mark on society through art and other passions.
Contemporary Dance
Students are invited to explore the vibrant world of Contemporary Dance through classes taught by professional dancers at Lineage Performing Arts Center in Pasadena. This course explores the dynamic movement qualities and patterns that define contemporary dance—such as falling and recovering, spiraling, contracting and releasing, leaning, tilting, weight sharing and partner movement—while fostering each student’s unique artistic voice.
Through thoughtfully designed exercises, students enhance their strength, flexibility, and stamina, all while cultivating a heightened awareness of body, flow, energy, and the surrounding physical environment. Whether you are an experienced dancer or stepping into a dance class for the first time, you will find a welcoming space to grow, express, and experience the joy of movement.
